About Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh, the "Land of the Rising Sun," is a breathtaking frontier in Northeast India defined by its rugged Himalayan landscapes and deep cultural diversity. As the easternmost state of the country, it serves as a sanctuary for rare wildlife and ancient traditions, where snow-capped peaks give way to lush subtropical forests and rushing river valleys like the Siang and Lohit. Home to dozens of distinct indigenous tribes—each with its own unique language, vibrant attire, and soulful festivals—the state offers a spiritual and adventurous escape, from the serene heights of the Tawang Monastery to the dense, biodiverse jungles of Namdapha National Park.

How to Reach

Arunachal Pradesh, the "Land of the Rising Sun," is well-connected to the rest of India via Assam. Because of its mountainous terrain, most journeys involve a mix of flight or train followed by a scenic road trip.

1. By Air

  • Donyi Polo Airport (Hollongi): Located near the state capital, Itanagar, this is the first dedicated commercial airport in the state. It has direct flights to major cities like Kolkata and Guwahati.
  • Guwahati (LGBI Airport): For travelers heading to western Arunachal (Tawang/Bomdila), flying into Guwahati is often the most practical choice. From here, you can drive or take a helicopter service.
  • Lilabari/Dibrugarh Airport: These airports in Assam are convenient entry points for central and eastern regions like Ziro, Pasighat, and Namdapha.

2. By Rail

  • Naharlagun Railway Station: This is the primary station serving Itanagar, with regular trains (including the Donyi Polo Express and Rajdhani) coming from Guwahati and Delhi.
  • Assam Railheads: Many travelers use Tinsukia or Murkongselek stations to access the eastern parts of the state.

3. By Road

Road travel is the most common way to explore the state.

  • From Guwahati: A roughly 8–10 hour drive to Itanagar.
  • The Tawang Circuit: Usually starts from Guwahati or Tezpur, involving an overnight halt in Bomdila or Dirang due to the long distance and high altitude.
  • Public Transport: State transport buses (APSTS) and shared sumos operate daily from North Lakhimpur, Tezpur, and Guwahati.
