About Meghalaya

Often referred to as the "Abode of Clouds," Meghalaya is a breathtaking highland state in Northeast India defined by its dramatic landscapes and vibrant tribal heritage. It is home to the wettest places on Earth, Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, where torrential rains feed plunging waterfalls and carve deep limestone caves. The state is globally renowned for its ingenious Living Root Bridges, handcrafted by the indigenous Khasi and Jaintia tribes from the roots of ancient rubber trees. From the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki to the rolling pine-covered hills of Shillong—frequently called the "Scotland of the East"—Meghalaya offers a serene yet rugged escape into one of the most ecologically diverse regions of the world.

How to Reach

Reaching Meghalaya, the "Abode of Clouds," involves a scenic journey through the hills of Northeast India. Since the state has limited rail and air connectivity within its borders, Guwahati in Assam serves as the primary gateway.

1. By Air

  • Umroi Airport (Shillong Airport): Located about 30 km from Shillong, this airport has limited connectivity, primarily with regional flights from Kolkata and Guwahati.
  • Guwahati Airport (GAU): This is the most practical option. It is well-connected to all major Indian cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc.). From the airport, you can hire a private taxi or take a shared cab for the 3 to 4-hour drive (approx. 120 km) to Shillong.

2. By Road

Meghalaya is best explored by road, with National Highway 40 connecting Guwahati to Shillong. The roads are generally in excellent condition and offer beautiful views of the Umiam Lake (Barapani).

  • Private Taxis: Available at Guwahati Airport and the Railway Station.
  • Shared Cabs: Very popular and cost-effective; these usually depart from the Paltan Bazaar area in Guwahati.
  • Buses: Both private and Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) buses run regularly between Guwahati and Shillong.

3. By Rail

Meghalaya does not have a major railway station.

  • Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest railhead. It is a major junction connected to the rest of India.
  • Upon arrival, you can proceed by road via taxi or bus as mentioned above.
